Bachelor Thesis
Guidelines for Bachelor’s Thesis – Winter Semester 25-26
1. Eligibility
-
The basic requirement for writing a Bachelor’s thesis at the chair is to have successfully completed the course “International Economics (Internationale Wirtschaft)”.
2. Thesis Format and Language
-
Bachelor’s theses at our chair are empirical, meaning students are expected to work independently with data to answer a clearly defined research question.
-
Most topics can be written in either German or English, depending on the student’s preference. However, some topics are available only in English. This information will be clearly indicated in the published topic list.
3. Topic Selection Period (15–19 September 2025)
-
A list of available thesis topics will be published on the chair’s website on 01 September 2025.
-
Students must submit their ranked topic preferences (from most to least preferred) no later than 19 September 2025 (23:59).
-
Students may also propose their own topic, but please note:
-
Student-proposed topics will be considered only if the total demand does not exceed available supervision capacity.
-
These topics will be placed at the bottom of the allocation priority list.
-
-
Topic allocation will be based on a first-come, first-served basis, taking into account the stated preferences and topic availability.
4. Start and Duration
-
The official start date for all Bachelor’s theses is 13 October 2025.
-
The expected duration of the thesis is approximately 9 weeks, allowing students to complete their work before the Christmas break.
5. Expression of Interest
-
If you meet the eligibility requirements and are interested in writing your thesis at the chair, please contact Kristina Saveska during the topic selection period (15–19 September 2025).
- Your message should include your ranked topic preferences (from most to least preferred). If you wish to propose your own topic, please include A one-page exposé (which question, which data, which methods).
Master Thesis
Please note that in order to write a master’s thesis at the Chair of Macroeconomics, you need to take part in at least one seminar offered by the chair beforehand.
A Master’s thesis takes a whole semester.
Those who are interested in a master’s thesis at the Chair of Macroeconomics, please contact Prof. Merkl directly.

- Please note that you have to sign in independently for the seminar for the bachelor’s or master’s thesis (Campo).
